INTERNATIONAL SERVICE activities advance international understanding, goodwill and peace
through the global cooperation of Rotary clubs in supporting worldwide humanitarian efforts.

Calgary Chinook has been sponsored World Community Service activities in the Dominican Republic for several years, assisting local Rotary Clubs in support of their community. Funding sources include other Rotary Clubs, Rotary District 5360, Wild Rose Foundation of Alberta, Rotary International, and other agencies.

Cowboy Joel ready for Stampede

Joel, an energetic teen from the Dominican Republic, has been involved with Jan Tollefson‘s efforts for several years as guide, interpreter, and friend to Canadian student groups visiting his country.

Joel visited Calgary during Stampede, and then other parts of Canada during a fundraising visit to help offset University costs.

Read about his visit in the June 25th newsletter here

[Interested in assisting Joel with his education costs, see Jan's Projects or contact Norm Myden or Norm Moro.]

Club members take a particular interest once they've visited the Dominican Republic and meet local Rotarians. Norm Moro and Norm Myden returned from their second trip in January 2002.

Our involvement and efforts have been helped enormously by the interest, energy, and participation of Dr. Jan Tollefson and her activities, featured at the
AddYourLight web page. See how International Service can make a difference by following the links.

A Bright Idea! Using white LED bulbs in simple wiring designs for lamps and flashlights to light up homes in the developing world, Calgary's Dr. Irvine-Halliday has already lit up villages in Nepal and India, and his idea of PICO POWER is starting to take off in those countries. Great potential for the Dominican Republic.
