The Rotary Club of Calgary Chinook
Calgary Alberta Canada

Dominican Republic January 2002

by Norman Moro and Norman Myden

We met with the president and past president of Nagua Rotary Club at a school where they were making a presentation for a computer that had been donated through friends of Dr. Jan Tollefson.

The Nagua Rotary Club has been recognized two years in a row as the most outstanding Rotary Club of the Dominican Republic. They are doing a cataract project together with a Rotary Club in the Eastern United States that sends doctors down to do cataract operations.

They are also doing other projects with schools in the community. There is a real need for computers and schools supplies etc. in this area. Our club may look into doing a project with Rotary in Action, where a freight container filled with supplies is sent.

Beanie Babies a big hit!
Thank You Ted !

The Beanie Babies that Ted Wada donated and Norm Moro took down were extremely welcomed by the school children and the children at the orphanage.

We visited the orphanage at Nagua. It was a delight to see the improvements compared to when we were previously there in July of 1999. The new orphanage building is very nice along with the improvements to the school. The pastor's house has also been improved. There is a new workshop and space for a retail store, which will hopefully help them to become self-sufficient.

Norm Moro also made sure that the washrooms and the septic system that we donated money for was working properly.

We had an opportunity to walk thought the community of Puerto Rico A Pie and visited the homes of people who have received water filters. We spoke with five different families (through the translator).

We found out the benefits and how the families liked the filtered water and how there was less stomach problems etc. from using the water filter. It was quite a rewarding experience.

We also got to meet Joel again he helped translate on our previous trip, and is presently going to University supported by Jan Tollfson's fund raising. Jan is trying to raise money to bring him to Vancouver and Calgary this coming summer. Hopefully that will happen and the club will get to meet a fine young Dominican.
