Had the opportunity Friday, Sept 7th to attend the Bethany Riverview Sneak-A-Peak for their new purpose-built long term care centre in Dover.
Thanks to the Alberta government funding along with the Bethany Care Society, mortgage financing and a 5 Million fund raising campaign, they have created new accommodations which is a "Campus of Care for Seniors" that is designed for people with complex dementia.
Along with several other Rotary clubs in and around Calgary, our Chinook Rotary club donated funds for the Atrium Gardens which created an indoor area where residents and family/visitors could spend time in a warm and inviting area. It will act as a greenhouse in growing vegetables that can be used in food preparation at the facility as well as plants for decorative purpose. All which can involve the participation of those residents within the facility.
The 210 beds include 120 beds dedicated to people with complex dementia. The objective was to create a space where those living with dementia can live safely and have the freedom to move around and to experience life in the most normal way possible. The building consists of "households" with 15 people and "neighbourhoods" of 30 people. Focus was on design features to make the environment safe for them by using colour and texture and lighting that makes it a more appealing, easier environment for those folks to be able to find their way to their space.
Long term care has been much needed over the past many years and my thanks to the Alberta government in making this finally happen. It has opened up beds in hospitals that were not being used for the right reasons due to a lack of a long term care availability to move those seniors to. Also my thanks to fellow Rotarians as well as members of the public who contributed to the fundraising and made this possible. Visit the website Bethany Riverview to see the project!!
